Candidates may complete the A-Level Physics (9702) course in 2 ways:

1.      Enter for the AS-Level Physics (taking Papers 1, 2 and 3 in a single examination session – an AS-Level certification is received), then continue for a full A-Level qualification (taking Papers 4 and 5 in another session). The AS-Level marks will be carried forward. Each of these is usually completed in a year (total = 2 years).

2.      Enter for the full A-Level Physics (taking all papers) in a single session. This is usually completed in 2 years.

Candidates have the choice to not continue for the full A-Level Physics if they chose the first option.


Some details on each paper is given below.

·         Paper 1 (Multiple Choice)Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes. Marks: 40. Content: 40 multiple-choice questions based on the AS syllabus. % of AS examination: 31%. % of A-Level examination: 15%

·         Paper 2 (AS Structured Questions)Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes. Marks: 60. Content: Variable number of structured questions of variable value. % of AS examination: 46%. % of A-Level examination: 23%

·         Paper 3 (Advance Practical Skills)Duration: 2 hours. Marks: 40. Content: 2 experiments (1 hour each) drawn from different area of physics. % of AS examination: 23%. % of A-Level examination: 12%

·         Paper 4 (A Level Structured Questions)Duration: 2 hours. Marks: 100. Content: Variable number of structured questions of variable value based on the A Level syllabus (materials encountered in the AS Level syllabus may be included). % of A-Level examination: 38%

·         Paper 5 (Planning, Analysis and Evaluation)Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes. Marks: 30. Content: 2 questions of equal mark value based on the practical skills of planning, analysis and evaluation. % of A-Level examination: 12%


Now for each paper there are different variants, depending on the countries, … Any one candidate will need to sit for only one of these variants.
